For those members who knew him and to those who didn’t; today came the sad loss of Malcolm Hall who played squash for many years at the club.
He was the reining club champion for many years and one of the most talented players to ever have played for the club, representing them many times in the team.
Malcolm was not only a fabulous player, but also a great role model, source of knowledge and informal coach, but most of all a real gentleman.
He played his squash to win, but always in a fair and gracious manner and will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Hi all, unfortunately due to short notice work commitments, neither Dave or Jeff are available to coach the Juniors this weekend.
We understand it is short notice and those that attend regularly will be disappointed, but sadly we have no option but to cancel the session. We will email those whom we have details for.
We are hopeful that one of the committee will be able to go down to put the lights on for an UN-SUPERVISED session, similar to the Tuesday sessions we ran in the Winter. This requires a parent or guardian to be in attendance for the time the junior is on site to be responsible for their safety.
The club ended a successful season and look forward to the coming season with enthusiasm, following a number of team, individual and club achievements!
The team ended 3rd from top in the league, narrowly missing promotion by only a difference in for and against points (similar to goal difference) so credit to all the guys who contributed who were: Steve Lacy, Dave McCabe, Owen Hayward, Connor Watson, Woody, Mark Porter and Jeff Watson. A summer league is due to start and is based on a handicap system so the club welcome anyone who is interested in playing to develop their squash? Contact Jeff Watson or Owen Hayward for more information.
The team were also successful in reaching the plate final of the 5 man team event, sadly coming runners up but a great achievement anyway, well done to all those who played!
On an individual front, we had a number of achievements which show how the club is continuing to develop. There were a few of note which were:
Connor Watson (13yrs) entered a number of England ranking tournaments, achieving a plate final runner up position and achieved an England ranking in the U15 age category – Well done Connor!
Dave McCabe and Jeff Watson reached the finals of the individual plate and main tournaments respectively – Well done to both!
As you are aware, the club has two level 2 qualified coaches (Dave and Jeff) who through their efforts and supported by the other club committee members, have seen our junior section grow from 1 to 13 in 6 months with some excellent potential squash players already beginning to emerge! This bodes well for the clubs future.
Congratulations to the 5 members of the team who beat Harrogate on Thursday night to reach the finals of the North Yorkshire League B Cup Final !! The match saw the scores ebb and flow for Owen at 5 and Mark at 4 where both matches sat at 2 games games all, going into the final set all square! Owen’s opponent seemed to find something extra in the last game and took the match 3:2, Mark however, took an early lead in the final game and all looked good until his opponent, who possessed great racket skills on his short game, clawed his way back to claim the game; 2:0 to Harrogate with 3 games left to play! Jeff playing at 3, found his opponent unable to cope with his short game and took the next rubber 3:0 to leave the match more balanced at 2:1 in Harrogate’s favour. Dave at 4 started slowly against a tricky opponent going 2 games to love down! Meanwhile on the other court, Steve playing at 1, playing a very accomplished opponent, won a close first game but then lost the second, so all still to play for. Dave played the next 2 games more in the fashion that we are used to and brought the rubber back to 2 all! Steve’s game however remained in the balance also ending at 2 all so both rubbers resting on the final set! After some good squash from Dave who won the final game, the match was all square at 2 all, all resting on Steve going into his final game! However, Steve played a match winning last game to take the rubber and the match 3:2 !! So, well done guys, lets hope the final delivers a similar amount of excitement and the same result! Here are the scores:
1. Steve Lacy v Johnathan Smith 9-7, 2-9, 9-4, 4-9, 9-4
2. Dave McCabe v Andy McMillan 0-9, 5-9, 9-5, 9-1, 9-0
3. Jeff Watson v Peter Bottomley 9-2, 9-2, 9-1
4. Mark Porter v Richard Finney 9-10, 8-10, 9-5, 9-3, 8-10
5. Owen Hayward v Tony Hind 4-9, 9-1, 6-9, 9-7, 2-9
Playing against Pateley Bridge, away on Thursday the team came home with all the spoils of a full 12 points! The home team were only able to raise 2 players so Steve Lacy (at 1) and Jeff Watson played for Northallerton to secure the victory. The team are currently sitting in 3rd place, 2 points behind Harrogate and 10 points (but with a game in hand) behind the leaders Collingham. Well done guys!
Junior coaching session back this Saturday (14th) after a break last week, see you there!
e have had such a great response to the recent taster sessions and junior coaching that we have a bunch of new members! Because of this, we have decided to hold a WEEKLY CLUB NIGHT to give everybody a chance to meet each other and play new people in a social environment. The plan at the moment is for a Weds evening from 7 till 9 but we would welcome the views of our new and longer standing members on this proposal. Go to the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/NorthallertonSquashClub?ref=hl or our twitter feed @SquashNorth to give us some feedback
We had a great junior morning at the club today (Saturday 23rd Nov) with 7 juniors down for the free coaching sessions with the club coaches Dave McCabe and Jeff Watson. The age range of the juniors was from 9 to 14 and we had fun with some warm up games and squash routines. All are keen to come back for more next Saturday!! Bring yours down to join the fun….
As you know, we have been running a number of taster sessions at the club over the last 6 weeks and last night saw the final session (for now!). We had a potential new lady member who is returning to the game after a long lay off, who after a few minutes on court really found her timing again! A couple of guys who are returning to play and our new to squash member who is really making good progress with his game! We have had a great mix of new members, complete families, new players and returning players, so all in all a successful campaign. Thanks to all involved and all those who took the time to come down for a session. Watch this space and our Facebook and Twitter feeds for updates on club nights and other events!!
The team had a good result on Thursday at home against the current league leaders Collingham, winning 3:0! Mark Porter at 3 winning comfortably 3:0 Dave McCabe at 2 winning after playing a difficult opponent 3:1 and Jeff Watson at 1 winning 3:0 against a very hard hitting opponent. So 12 points to help move us to 3rd in the table! Well done to all.
